Exclusive: Proud Boys leader was ‘prolific’ informer for law enforcement

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the Proud Boys extremist group, has a past as an informer for federal and local law enforcement, repeatedly working undercover for investigators after he was arrested in 2012, according to a former prosecutor and a transcript of a 2014 federal court proceeding obtained by Reuters.

  • The headline reads as if he was an informant against the Proud Boys. This first paragraph immediately blows that assertion out of the water. Calling the Proud Boys an extremist group is just more bias hackary. If this is true why haven’t the FBI shut them down? They operate totally out in the open where are all the investigations?

In the Miami hearing, a federal prosecutor, a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and Tarrio’s own lawyer described his undercover work and said he had helped authorities prosecute more than a dozen people in various cases involving drugs, gambling and human smuggling.

Tarrio, in an interview with Reuters Tuesday, denied working undercover or cooperating in cases against others. “I don’t know any of this,” he said, when asked about the transcript. “I don’t recall any of this.”

  • This is pretty simple if he did in fact inform on anyone but especially human trafficking (almost exclusively Mexican cartel) he might not want that getting out. Then again it wouldn’t be a shock to find out this is exactly why this information was leaked.

Law-enforcement officials and the court transcript contradict Tarrio’s denial. In a statement to Reuters, the former federal prosecutor in Tarrio’s case, Vanessa Singh Johannes, confirmed that “he cooperated with local and federal law enforcement, to aid in the prosecution of those running other, separate criminal enterprises, ranging from running marijuana grow houses in Miami to operating pharmaceutical fraud schemes.”

  • Like I said above someone being named in this sort of situation is wildly inappropriate. Seems to become clear this was a politically motivated and gross move by Johannes. Also notice the mention court transcripts but never mention that they were leaked. Which they must have been as they wouldn’t make an informant especially a “prolific” ones name public. This is just a general beef with “journalism” these days anyway where is the proof. That is a pretty serious claim to only back up with a pull quote from a clearly bias party.

Tarrio, 36, is a high-profile figure who organizes and leads the right-wing Proud Boys in their confrontations with those they believe to be Antifa, short for “anti-fascism,” an amorphous and often violent leftist movement. The Proud Boys were involved in the deadly insurrection at the Capitol January 6.

  • This entire paragraph is just a lie. The Proud Boys have never showed up to any AntiFa event. (I will admit they may have had small groups of their people counter protest but never anything organized) I only add that caveat because I don’t know for sure that’s never happened. AntiFa has shown up to many events the Proud Boys were attending. Many times they were asked to show up to provide security in places the police and known to stand down when AntiFa is attacking a conservative event. AntiFa is not an amorphous group there are many investigative journalist who have infiltrated the group and shown it is extremely organized and well-funded.

The records uncovered by Reuters are startling because they show that a leader of a far-right group now under intense scrutiny by law enforcement was previously an active collaborator with criminal investigators.

  • This statement is just hyperbolic why is that “startaling”?

Washington police arrested Tarrio in early January when he arrived in the city two days before the Capitol Hill riot. He was charged with possessing two high-capacity rifle magazines, and burning a Black Lives Matter banner during a December demonstration by supporters of former President Donald Trump. The D.C. Superior Court ordered him to leave the city pending a court date in June.

  • The magazines were unloaded and he didn’t have a gun. There was no explanation further so I won’t weigh in. Arrested for burning a BLM flag that’s funny because BLM burned many American flags in DC and elsewhere and no one was arrested for it.

Though Tarrio did not take part in the Capitol insurrection, at least five Proud Boys members have been charged in the riot. The FBI previously said Tarrio’s earlier arrest was an effort to preempt the events of January 6.

  • Don’t have much to add here members of Proud Boys being at the capitol that day isn’t shocking. There are plenty of videos showing the police opening doors and letting people into a public building. No denying there were people acting like idiots and destroying things but I haven’t seen anything where any of these guys were charged with any such crimes. This is playing on emotion plain and simple.

The transcript from 2014 shines a new light on Tarrio’s past connections to law enforcement. During the hearing, the prosecutor and Tarrio’s defense attorney asked a judge to reduce the prison sentence of Tarrio and two co-defendants. They had pleaded guilty in a fraud case related to the relabeling and sale of stolen diabetes test kits.

  • Here we are again will them pulling things from transcripts they do not provide. Also there is a concerning lack of “” in this statement. They have the transcipt why not at least provide a quote from it?

The prosecutor said Tarrio’s information had led to the prosecution of 13 people on federal charges in two separate cases, and had helped local authorities investigate a gambling ring.

Tarrio’s then-lawyer Jeffrey Feiler said in court that his client had worked undercover in numerous investigations, one involving the sale of anabolic steroids, another regarding “wholesale prescription narcotics” and a third targeting human smuggling. He said Tarrio helped police uncover three marijuana grow houses, and was a “prolific” cooperator.

  • Again this must be from leaked material or they are getting the info hear say. Also if he did in fact do any of this isn’t that a good thing? Something that stands out “prolific” cooperator…..why is only prolific in quotes? Did they pull it out of context?

There is no evidence Tarrio has cooperated with authorities since then. In interviews with Reuters, however, he said that before rallies in various cities, he would let police departments know of the Proud Boys’ plans. It is unclear if this was actually the case. He said he stopped this coordination after December 12 because the D.C. police had cracked down on the group.

  • It is pretty well know the Proud Boys are big blue lives matters supporters so what he is saying is most likely true. No matter how much this “journalist” tries to make it sound like he’s lying. The DC police were doing exactly what the NY police did to a few of the Proud Boys that landed a couple of them in jail for long stretches. They were going to show up and only arrest the Proud Boys. (There is security video of the fight in NY two Proud Boys got jumped by a group of AntiFa and ended up winning the fight.)

Tarrio on Tuesday acknowledged that his fraud sentence was reduced, from 30 months to 16 months, but insisted that leniency was provided only because he and his co-defendants helped investigators “clear up” questions about his own case. He said he never helped investigate others.

  • Again why would you out yourself as an informant?

That comment contrasts with statements made in court by the prosecutor, his lawyer and the FBI. The judge in the case, Joan A. Lenard, said Tarrio “provided substantial assistance in the investigation and prosecution of other persons involved in criminal conduct.”

As Trump supporters challenged the Republican’s election loss in often violent demonstrations, Tarrio stood out for his swagger as he led crowds of mostly white Proud Boys in a series of confrontations and street brawls in Washington, D.C., Portland, Oregon, and elsewhere.

  • In often violent demonstrations? Again just a flat out lie. Mostly white Proud Boys, two things are funny about this. One Tarrio isn’t white and Two AntiFa is almost exclusively white yet I have never heard of them described this way.

The Proud Boys, founded in 2016, began as a group protesting political correctness and perceived constraints on masculinity. It grew into a group with distinctive colors of yellow and black that embraced street fighting. In September their profile soared when Trump called on them to “Stand back and stand by.” Tarrio, based in Miami, became the national chairman of the group in 2018.

  • Embraced street fighting? They were the first and only group to finally hit back and protect (mostly women) conservatives who were constantly being attacked by AntiFa.

In November and December, Tarrio led the Proud Boys through the streets of D.C. after Trump’s loss. Video shows him on December 11 with a bullhorn in front of a large crowd. “To the parasites both in Congress, and in that stolen White House,” he said. “You want a war, you got one!” The crowd roared. The next day Tarrio burned the BLM banner.

  • We can pearl clutch and act offended by this rhetoric all we want but I won’t say anything until both sides are held to the same standard. That type of rhetoric is mundane compared to your typical AntiFa or BLM rally. “Pigs in a blanket fry em up like bacon” is one that stands out. Will it lead to bad things happening maybe. But until both sides are held accountable its disarming to be out raged from one side.

Former prosecutor Johannes said she was surprised that the defendant she prosecuted for fraud is now a key player in the violent movement that sought to halt the certification of President Joe Biden.

“I knew that he was a fraudster – but had no reason to know that he was also a domestic terrorist,” she said.

  • This appears to be the person who provided all of the information for this article. Does that sound like some who is neutral?

This is Reuters an outlet that the average person would think is pretty unbiased this is the “state” of our media today. Pun intended

President Trump took away our emotions

One very overlooked aspect of the Trump effect and something that slingshot him to the White House was, he removed the emotion from the argument. One deeply rooted tactic of the left was to use what their entire ideology is based on against people on the right, emotion. They will call people bigot, racist, misogynist and so on, this is effective for two reasons. One it gets people on the left worked up against whomever it is they are attacking. It also immediately puts the person that is being attacked on the defensive and turns the debate into an emotional battle. The interesting part about this tactic is it usually only works if the person who is being attacked isn’t guilty of the accusation. Most people who truly are racist or misogynistic wouldn’t be bother this, but against someone who is not and also dislikes those ideologies it is extremely effective.

When President Trump was being attacked on a daily basis with these usually tactics he just stayed on message. He rarely if ever acknowledged the attacks. Because of that he was accused of not being a “polished” politician. This need to be “polished” is exactly why the right couldn’t win the last two elections. Since the campaign by Obama was run mostly on if you attack him at all we will call you a racist, the right never stayed on message. They were constantly backtracking and trying to defend themselves against these claims no matter how baseless they may have been. So not only did this empower the base of the left but it made people on the right feel like their party was out of sync.

Trump was able to defeat this tactic by staying on message no matter what attacks were thrown at him. By doing this he also empowered a lot of people who used to shy away from sharing their opinions and the facts that created those opinions.  No longer was the left able to shut people down by just calling them names. President Trump made it clear that someone calling you something doesn’t make it so, if you stay on message they can’t shut you up. By removing the emotion and just talking about the facts their tactic becomes useless.

This lack of “polish” not only got him to the White House but it empowered a lot of people who felt voiceless. This is not just white males like the media would have you believe. It is all enemies of the left such as black conservatives. Women who don’t feed into the feminist movement. Legal immigrants who came to America to have a better life for themselves and their children. All of these groups who are supposed to be protected by the left but get attacked the first time they refuse to fall in line. This is who President Trump gave a voice during his campaign, and is why he won the White House.
